It's a Pillow Fight

A certain someone, inspired me this past week to clean up my space, do some 'ditching' and possibly save my sanity. It started when I saw the nasty pillow in his post. Blech. But isn't there a saying "when you point a 'blech' finger at someone, three fingers are pointing back at you?" In reading all of the comments about pillows and whether or not people clean them or throw them away, I got to thinking. For the past 6 months or so, I have been sleeping with a very comfortable feather pillow which came with our house. I have also had headaches almost every day for the past 2 1/2 months. Part of the reason I have not blogged or done much of anything else recently is due to these constant headaches. I have done everything I could think of to rid myself of them (they clearly are developing from my sinuses). Netti pot, diet change, Sinus Buster, drugs (lots of these), facial steams, accupressure, accupuncture....and still the headaches kept coming. Many days they completely derailed any attempts I had of accomplishing anything. It has been very frustrating and EVERYBODY is tired of hearing me see, "I have a headache".

So, I got to thinking about my pillow, which upon further reading I realized was probably filled with dust mites, dust and God only knows what else. Can I say BLECH!!!??? Well since it exploded in my washing machine yesterday, I actually know what was inside. CHICKEN FEATHERS! Gag! Even remembering the smell of them wet as I scooped handful upon handful out of the washer is going to make me puke! I don't have a picture, but they are outside in three bags, sulking. Wet, old, dusty chicken feathers! AND I SLEPT ON THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!! Choke.
Somethings are meant to be kept. You know I love vintage. BUT I have come to understand there is no such thing as a 'good vintage feather pillow'. Before those feathers had a chance to even cluck about how wonderful they are, I purchased a brand new hypoallergenic pillow.

So when you 'ditch' and blog about it, you actually may be saving someones life.

Three nights on a new pillow = three days without even the hint of a headache.

It may well be a coincidence, especially since my doctor just called as I was writing this (I put a call in so I could know what I was allergic to) and she said I have not allergies to dust or dust mites. Either way, now that I KNOW what was inside that pillow I am relieved I will never sleep on it again. Thanks Peter.

More on how I cleaned my sewing space tomorrow.

  3. Thanks Michael...and just having woken up again...I can already feel it is going to be day 4 without a headache. It is a small miracle. I can't begin to tell you how I have suffered with these ALL summer. Molly and I CAN"T wait to see the show. I get all giddy just thinking about finally giving the two of you a big hug.

  4. Glad the headache is gone. I've had to ditch a few feather pillows because the husband has allergies -- including the one my Grandmother made for me, that I used for decades!! By the way, one way to add to the life of pillows is cold winters. Just put them outside on a very cold, wintery day. Dust mites dead!
