Hats, Hats, Bring Back Hats

I have been searching E-Bay for a hat for my Carmen Miranda styled outfit. This hat was spotted at the Kentucky Derby this year, hey maybe she will give it to me and I need look no further.

It seems the Kentucky Derby is the only place woman wear hats today, unless of course they are sporting a baseball cap of their favorite team.

How disappointed I am that the only hat (basically) women wear today is a baseball hat with a ponytail sticking out of it in order to go to the store without doing their hair and/or to cover bedhead. What has happened to style? Now I know this is a general remark, but think about it, when was the last time you saw a women in a milliner styled hat? No fair if you live in Paris, Rome or NYC...I'm sure they are spotted there every once in awhile. And no fair if you went to the Kentucky Derby a few weeks ago.
The history of the wearing of hats by women, from the Vintage Fashion Guild, basically has the woman's hat ending in the 1960's. This was due to the bouffant hair (I read this somewhere) that could not really have a hat on it. But look at the hairstyles of the 1800's! There was some BIG hair going on and they managed to wear a hat. Hats going out of style in the 1960's was also due to the Catholic church lifting the demand that women had to have their heads covered. Growing up Catholic myself, I remember the thin black poof of lace my mother used to put on top of her 60's hair. I guess I had one too!!!

I say it is time to bring the hat back. And I mean hats, not baseball caps. I for one am going to make it a point to wear a hat each day next week. I will post photos of them for you and do my best to wear them out...I will need the ghost of Lisa Douglas with me to give me confidence.

With so many vintage hats on E-bay there is no need to go out and purchase something new and made in China. Let's refurbish, revamp, and recreate hats that are already in existence.

  Can be purchased on Etsy.

This one would go purrrrrfectly with my Simplicity 3084. I might have to keep this one for myself.

But this next one might be even better.

Which do you think would look better with Simplicity 3084 and the brown and turquoise brocade? It might also work with McCalls 5861. Eh?

Send me a picture of YOU in a favorite vintage hat and I will post it on the blog.

  1. I don't have pictures of me in any cute hats but I wanted to let you know my youngest brothers GF wore an itty bitty hat on her hair to the senior prom. Similar in style to the teal hat with the veil. It was adorable and I have to second the Bring Back the Hats motion!!

  2. My Beau's mother could give you a history on how the Kennedy's killed the hat. According to her JFK and JKO were the leading fashion icons of the time. What they did, America did. JFK didn't wear hats and apparently they fell out of fashion because of it. I haven't done any of my own research on this so take it as you will.

  3. Kelli...would love to see photo of brothers GF in her prom dress.

Nancy...She(JKO) wore the pillbox and made it popular and I guess that was the end of it. She was THE style maker of her time, much like Princess Diana was in the 1980's.
