Not Laboring on Labor Day

It's Labor Day here in the United States signifying the unofficial end of summer. Boo. I really love summertime even though I did not have much time this year to do really summery things. No vacation. As a matter of fact I have not been near any water this whole summer. I have not donned a swimsuit or even gotten a slight tan. I guess all the sewing and blogging has kept me indoors.

My garden is filled with tomato's though and I was able to can a few jars the other day.
I also for the first time grew beans for drying. With just two of us eating it seemed that last year the garden got away from us faster than we could eat everything, so this year I tried planting some things that you don't have to eat right away and/or keep much longer. I have leeks in the garden as well as fennel and kale. These are all hardier than say tomatoes or the ever growing green and yellow squash. I love black beans so gave those a try. Now I am hooked and can't wait for next year so I can grow more dry beans.
I had a huge ahhhaa moment as I was shelling all the dried beans. It is no wonder most people in the years before mass produced foods never had to worry too much about weight. It was time consuming to grow and care for and they only ate what they could prepare and keep preserved. I could write a whole post about this but I will leave it to another day.

It is late as I write this and I have worked the past three night till very late in the evening and my eyes are tired. It is Labor Day right? So I can rest? Is that what it is about? Fill me in.

P.S. Big news in our household this past Friday. My son proposed to his sweetheart. We are all very happy and excited for them. They are an adorable couple.

  1. Your tomatoes look beautiful. As do those dried beans. We're too close to the mountains to grow tomatoes and I miss those. Congrats on the new family member and I hope you get a restful day off.
