I'm Dreaming of a 40's Kitchen, just like the ones I used to know.

Anyone else out there dream of a kitchen like this?
This is an ad for a 1948 St. Charles Kitchen
It must be some sort of nostalgia thing. It makes me happy to just look at it.
I'm not so fond of the dancing vegetable border, but I do LOVE all the little side shelves and would love to
make lunch for a child while they sit on that stool.

Imagine! What WERE they thinking 30 years later when kitchen designers flipped
the colors around making kitchens dark and dreary like this 1970's kitchen.

The truth of the matter is that neither of these will hubby like. I don't know which he would gag at more.
It would be a complete toss up (no pun intended) for him to choose.
Meanwhile, what do you think of these? Yay or Nay for "the pantry". They are about $40.00.
I will probably paper the back of the shelves with the kitchen paper. Is it too much?
I am busy trying to organize, pack some things, clean out closets, paint and help hubby over at the new house, help Betty, work at the restaurant and somehow fit in all the other things that life entails. I am sorry if the blog posts have been boring or lacking lately.

See you soon. Would love to chat with some of you.

If your in the mood to go back in time and hear the theme music from "I Dream of Jeannie", here it is.

  1. I, too, am dreaming of a 1940's kitchen! Actually, I HAVE one- our house was built in the 40's - but our kitchen needs SERIOUS help that we cannot afford to give it! I dress it up as best I can with all of my vintage stuff, but I dream of how it COULD be.
And I just love those dancing and singing vegetables.

  2. I just saw Barbara Eden in person over the weekend! So funny that you would post a picture of her, especially relating to kitchens.

I too love the white, airy, 1940s kitchen. I abhor dark wood in kitchens. I dream of having nice white cabinets someday... I just have to get Fiance to approve. Not very easy considering he got new kitchen cabinets only a year before I moved in. Guess those will have to stay wood for now (at least it's a light wood) and white cabinets will have to wait for our next house.

As for the canisters I say go for it! 40$ doesn't seem like too much for a nice set like that. Especially if it has a bread canister.

  4. I like the shelf paper idea- it will be a splash of color but not too much.
That white kitchen is very similar to mine, but without the red countertops (boohoo!):

  5. Okay, so I'm the first one to say "nay" to the canisters. They're cute but....awwww, I don't know--if you love them, buy them--if not, something better will come along.

I think you're starting to channel my grandmother, Miss Lassie. Remember how I commented that she used that SAME EXACT WALLPAPER to cover and line just about everything? Ah-huh, I can feel it AND she was a sewer and a knitter and if you start making rice balls, I'll die!! (I'll explain later)

    You're the best!:)

    xoxo

  6. Ooh! I think those tins would be delightful and no, the paper would not be too much. I think it is vintagey without being tacky. It looks quite modern.
