On the Therapy Couch with Midge

Okay friends, I have more to admit to you. Going through my Barbies has been better than therapy. I am learning so much about myself and my past. Who I was and who I have become. Could it be possible that these dolls had more of an impact on my life than I have ever thought?

I have decided that I am a nerd and I love it. There is only one person in my 'real' world of friends who understands my love for these dolls. Thanks Stephanie for making me feel almost normal. With others that I have shared this with, I have gotten rolled eyes and a feeling of disdain.

I have spent years as an un-fashionista. I did not know the names of current designers in the trend, name brands or frankly anything. I bought clothes that were on sale, comfortable and easy to care for. I was raising two children on a budget and most, if not all of my spare dollars went for them. I tucked my love for fashion away in a dark corner of my being. I could not unearth it at the possible risk of my children becoming homeless waifs.

I can't tell you the moment when I started peaking at that long lost dark corner of my being, but it was sometime around my 50th birthday when I started searching for a vintage dress to wear. A monster was unearthed...but not for the fashion of today, but for the fashion of the past, and specifically the era's I remembered from my childhood.

So what does this all have to do with Midge? Nothing! I just wanted to share with you how I got this way. Looking back at my younger years I LOVED fashion...and I had forgotten. Thank you Barbies for this wonderful blast from my past.

Midge: Midge Hadley married to Allen Sherwood

Here is how she would have come back in 1964. This is the Midge I have. I had the two piece bathing suit for years, but no longer have it.

Miss Moll Doll put her hair into a ponytail and this is how I found her the other day...
minus the 80's ponytail holder.

Barbie 039
Midge had a visitor and it wasn't Allen....I guess the mouse needed to sharpen its teeth.

Barbie 042
I wet and combed her hair and almost got her flip back...and here she is in a quintessential 60's outfit.
Barbie 047
I was in the band, but not a majorette, I only wish I had a photo of me in my band uniform. It was awesome!
I don't remember the hat, baton, or stockings. I do recall the gloves (hard to get on) and the boots.
Barbie 045
You can see that Midge has all her fingers and even her nail polish is in pretty good shape.

This is a Tammy outfit. What I have found in my research is that the majority of my clothes are Tammy clothes. My guess is they 'might' have been less expensive as Barbie clothes and with 5 children in the family, my mom bought the least expensive.

How I remember the shoes. They were pointy and so unlike  Barbies shoes

I still have the bag minus the gold chain.

So that's it for today...did you have a Midge doll? My font changed when I copied the walking the dog outfit and I can't fix it. Did you notice? (I spy a changed font).

Tomorrow...Scooter and Pepper

  1. Somehow I missed Midge entirely. Was she Barbie-size. And how about Francie?

Can't wait to hear about Skooter tomorrow!

  2. Peter, Midge had the same body as Barbie and they can interchange clothes. In creating Midge Matel was trying to create a less sexual looking doll (they got some flack).

I did not have Francie..but did have a Stacey which I no longer have.

I am writing the skooter post right now and will post your skooter if you don't mind.

  3. I had a used Barbie that was handed down from an aunt 4 years older than me, and we moved so often that my mother threw out everything I had except my Tony Tiger cookie jar. I did enjoy your stroll down Midge's memory lane!

  4. That wasn't a mouse chew on Midge's arm, Lassie. She had her tattoo removed...duh!!
