Have No Fear

Last night we had a fun and laughter filled evening at our friend Brian's house. Miss Stephanie was also there and we all laughed till our sides hurt. Brian's friend Fred rounded out the guest list and because he is a cartoonist we started talking about our favorite childhood cartoons.

Cartoons of yesteryear resemble nothing of their counterparts of today. Computers have replaced hand sketching and gone are the days of the voice overs like those of Mel Blanc and June Foray.

I was not a huge Looney Tune fan although as with most people of my generation, I watched them. What I loved were the half hour cartoons of my youth and I wanted to share some of my favorites with you this week.

One of my all time favorites is the Underdog series. I can look in Wikipedia and find out all the information on it and share it with you and I will, but before I go there and fill my mind with facts, let me tell you what I know about it.

Nothing, nada...except that I loved it.

I can't sing the tune, but if I heard it I would tell you right away what it was. I don't know any lines from it except, "Have no fear, Underdog is here". I have never been someone who remembers the minusia of things. My mind remembers things in broad terms and it certainly remembers things I love.

.....minutes after writing this.....

I just went to Wikipedia and am in the midst of a swooooooooooon. I had forgotten almost everything about the characters of this delightful series.

Shoeshine Boy aka Underdog
Sweet Polly Purebred
Simon Bar Sinister

I think I must have loved the quirkiness of this dog and the fact that he was deemed an underdog. I have always held a soft spot in my heart for the underdogs of this world. Do you share my love of this cartoon?

I am going to take the next 5 days and share with you my other favorites. Maybe they are yours too. You'll have to stay tuned to see what mine are...but for today you can share with me your favorites.

  2. YES!!! It seems that almost all the characters were animals.

  3. My husband works in the animation industry and was taught to animate using classical animation techniques. There are many people in the industry who share your exact same sentiments. Famous actors as the 'voice' boils their blood, as then the character becomes more about the actor as opposed to the character. Also, he won't ever hire an animator that can not draw draw draw. He says that he can tell by looking at a clip right away who came into the industry via computer training and who can draw.

The industry is very frustrating for artists out there who long for the good old days but are slaves to the TV and toy executives who think they know better what kids these days will watch.

  4. PepperToast..thanks for all of that information. I guess I forgot to mention that many of today's cartoons are created for marketing purposes.

  5. Oh my, I just re-read my post and I sound a bit angry. I am not I assure you! It is a constant source of irritation for my husband to be sure and we must own every DVD box set of all available old time cartoons. Sure enough, those are the cartoons my kids really enjoy. It is so sad to see what 'the corporate machine' has slipped it's greedy fingers into.

See there I go again.... best be shutting up now. Carry on with your wonderful walk down memory lane LOL!
